Interior Design is More Than Styling: The Edwards Design Studio Shares What Really Matters

Interior design is often misunderstood as a finishing touch. Many assume it comes into play only once the structural and functional aspects of a space are complete. But at The Edwards Design Studio, founder Ellen Edwards encourages clients to see design as a strategic tool that begins early and shapes every element of how a space feels and functions.

“Many assume interior design is just about choosing finishes or making a space look pretty. In reality, it’s a strategic process that impacts how people feel, behave, and interact within a space.”

Ellen’s Perth-based studio is focused on creating spaces that work for people. Companies hire TEDS to consider the emotional, cultural, and operational needs of each environment. In commercial settings especially, design has the power to influence wellbeing, support team dynamics, and reduce stress.

A standout example of this approach involved a 24/7 control floor where staff regularly worked 12-hour shifts. The business wanted to improve employee wellbeing and reduce environmental stress. Ellen designed refuge spaces that used deep blues and greens, paired with soft lighting, to create a spa-like atmosphere. These areas allowed staff to pause and reset without leaving the workplace.

Inspired by Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel, Ellen collaborated with the mechanical engineer on the project to develop a unique architectural solution for the building’s northern façade. Smaller, tinted windows were positioned to reduce heat exposure and maintain a calm internal ambiance. The design not only improved comfort but also addressed sustainability goals, creating a workplace that supported both human needs and environmental responsibility.

These projects reflect a consistent message from Ellen: involve your designer early. Many clients miss the opportunity to maximise their space because design decisions are treated as an afterthought.

“Involving an interior designer early in the process makes all the difference. It allows us to align the space with your goals right from the start, avoid expensive changes later, and make sure no design potential is missed.”

Ellen’s process starts with understanding. She works to align the visual, spatial, and operational needs of a business with the lived experience of the people using the space. From lighting and colour to material choices and mechanical integration, every element is intentional.

Design is not just about making a space look good. It is about creating environments that support comfort, focus, innovation, and wellbeing.
